Each Wednesday we enjoy a Potluck of inspiration at Hot Pink Apron.com.
We bring the conversation starter, you bring the comments stuffed with personal touch.
We’re still working out our personal menus for this Sunday’s Cinco de Mayo celebrations, but there is one ingredient already topping our shopping lists – Tequila! So, this week’s potluck ask is…
What’s in Your Margarita Glass?
Kari: Hahah, I can’t think of a better way to start the day than having this discussion! I’m a beer drinker so I’ll probably be celebrating with a bottle of Dos Equis or Corona… or Negra Modelo, if I can ever find it in Nova Scotia! So good!
Reagan: My friend, Cat, introduced me to this amazing tequila drink (although I don’t know what it’s called). Peel and blend an English cucumber with a 26oz bottle of tequila. Let it sit overnight, then strain out the pulp. Mix a shot of your cucumber tequila with a squeeze of lime and some shakes of tabasco. SO delicious and so so dangerous.
Jodi: I do love the good old stand-by:
The Classic Margarita.
Ingredients: tequila, triple sec, lime juice
Served: on the rocks or neat with a salt or sugar rim
Caitlin: I love a margarita. My best friend lived down the street from the finest marg in Ottawa (and possibly North America) and every Cinco de Mayo I think of those heady days when we’d go out for dinner and spend more on tequila than on tacos…
Also, I firmly believe in the therapeutic power of tequila! A few years ago I may have overdone it on the Patron the night before running a race and I’ll tell you this much, I did NOT die on the track the next morning.
Ship: The only time my hubs, Big Daddy P, & I ever broke up was after 3 real squeezed lime margs on the rocks at a bar called Blue Dogs in Costa Rica. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila divorce.
Amanda: Hubby #1 and I are willing to take that challenge, Ship. We’ll order 4 tequila slammers each and if at the end we are still friends we’ll consider our marriage indestructible.
I should mention, as I write this from our vacation spot in Malta, the husband is drinking (a ‘Maria’ – made with a maltese liquor made from prickly pear, not unlike tequila) the campest cocktail ever. It’s pale pink, sweet, and the salt sprinkled liberally on the sides of the glass all adds to the impression that if the Disney princesses drank, this is what they’d order. Cinqo de Mayo it is not.
Kristina: A straight-up classic and expertly mixed margarita is one of my favourite things ON EARTH. If you MUST have one of those frozen bastardizations (ok fine they’re great too but not the same), splash a little Chambord or Aperol in it. OH MAN. There was also a phase where tequila and tonic (two wedges of lime please) was my go-to mixed drink. Tequila in Caesars instead of vodka is also outstanding.
Man, all this tequila talk is making me thirsty…
OH WAIT! Avocado Margarita at Curra’s Grill in Austin, TX. THAT is my favourite thing on Earth. I know it sounds weird but you gotta trust me on this.
Ingredients: frozen margarita mix, 100% agave tequila, fresh avocado pulp, a few sprigs of cilantro, fresh lime
Toss all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.
Serve: in a margarita glass with a salted rim, wedge of lime and a few springs of cilantro.
Dana: Kristina, I was so intrigued by the idea of an avocado margarita, I had to try it as soon as you posted the link. A firm PASS from this Apronite. Maybe 1/2 an avocado was too much? I think the main problem lay in me not being in Austin, TX though. If it was a balmy 90°F out, there was a mariachi band playing in the corner and I was parched, then (maybe), yes, this margarita may turn my crank.
Unfortunately in the chilly comfort of my Canadian home, it was one helluva intense pudding cup. Or as the hubs so elegantly put it, “What a baby would throw up if a baby drank tequila.” <- that pretty much killed it for me.
I’m not really one to reach for the fruity cocktails (Guinness and Scotch for this gal, please), although I do enjoy a Grapefruit Sunrise now and then – and not just because of the awesome hot pink hue it creates when shaken.
Ingredients: 4 oz grapefruit juice, 2 oz tequila, 1/2 oz grenadine, lime or orange slice for garnish.
Serve: Pour the tequila and orange juice into a highball glass with ice cubes. Stir. Slowly pour the grenadine around the inside edge of the glass, it will sink and slowly rise to mix the other ingredients.
Add all ingredients with ice into a shaker. Shake it up. Pour into a martini glass with a salted or sugared rim.
Cilantro, chipotle, avocado, plenty of fresh limes… Oh! It’s going to be a deliciously fresh weekend! Have a
terrific tequila-rrific Cinco de Mayo, everyone! xo
