FUN FRIDAY: Sometimes we need to loosen the apron straps and write about some of our influences outside of food. Don’t worry, it always comes back to food. This is a recap of our weekly Apronite adventures devouring the interweb.
This week on Hot Pink Apron.com we chatted about that moment when you realize that it’s time to put down the take-out menu and take on the kitchen for yourself with Kari’s post, ‘Kitchen Screw-Ups, Successes, and What I’ve Learned Along The Way’. The tenacious Jodi returned to the challenge of yam gnocchi and slayed it(!) with the simple recipe in her ‘I Yam Superwoman‘ post, while Dana reminisced on the perfect bake sale lemon bar with a little help from Florence, Bowie and Faith No More. Wednesday’s Potluck had us discussing ‘Spring Cleaning: The Foodie Way‘, which foods to pull from the pantry and tackle the spring cleaning beast with – naturally.
Albeit our posts are flavourful & fun this week, the overall tone of the online world has been rightfully somber. What happened in Boston on Monday is devastating. Our thoughts are with all of the individuals and families affected by such a tragic and senseless attack.
If you haven’t already read Patton Oswalt’s moving Facebook post on the marathon bombing, it’s worth taking the time to do so.
What We’re Reading:
Reagan: In my search for a recipe to make my own deodorant (yeah, I’m gonna try that, and no, I swear I’m not a dirty hippie), I found this neat site: www.crunchybetty.com
Jodi: Everyone may already know about this website, but if you don’t you must check it out: MessyNessyChic. It has an odd melange of things from Edith Piaf songs to a palace made of pebbles. Just a really interesting collection of really interesting articles, people, clothes and nostalgia.
Michelle: It might be “old” news but I’ve been hanging out at ThugKitchen crying my eyes out in laughter at the posts. I even made the Cilantro Pesto recipe from thug’s March 31st entry. It was good! Thug is expanding my vocabulary… It seems fitting a ‘Ship’ mate should cuss like a sailor.
Dana: The definitive answers to some of pop music’s most fascinating queries. I spit water for #16, it struck a chord with my funny bone.
One of our fave co-bloggers, Hunt Gather Love was featured in the Chicago Reader this week with her themed supper club, called ‘The Sup Club’. And now we’re all obsessed over the idea of starting our own themed supper clubs.
This is just great, simply great: 15 Katherine Hepburn Quotes Every Woman Should Live By
What We’re Drinking:
Kari is fortunate enough to live in the same home town as the Ironworks Distillery, in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. She can easily frolic down to the historic stone building and take her pick from the selection of spirits handcrafted from local, natural ingredients, one batch at a time. All the while, the rest of us are being teased by the Ironwork’s facebook page mentioning a spring-inspired original cocktail using their incredible rhubarb liquer, rum and lavender simple syrup. We’re not jealous, really, just thirsty.
What We’re Listening To:
Sure the cheerleader vomiting pink-ish sparkles caught our attention but it’s the genuine talent of MS MR that has kept us listening to the American duo. These are the singles from their LP and will likely be found on their debut studio album, Secondhand Rapture released May 14th, 2013. (Yes, you may recognize the vocals from one of the Game of Throne Season 3 trailers that featured their song ‘Bones’.)
What We’re Watching:
Speaking of, last Sunday’s Game of Throne‘s (HBO) episode was, dare we say it, hilarious. We wouldn’t dare give any spoilers but openly admit that a few of us are anxiously awaiting the follow up, possibly to be served with some Dothraki Blood Pie. What? You didn’t know that there is a Game of Thrones cookbook?! We could never kid about something so outstandingly awesome.
The feature film The Place Beyond The Pines starring Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes and Bradley Cooper was released last week. A tattooed Ryan Gosling zipping around on a motorcycle to a score written and performed by Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas) – Dana has had a hard time hiding her lady boner all week. For the sake of her blood circulation, we all hope she makes it to the theater soon.
Posted a year ago this month, we just discovered these incredible art installations from Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto made entirely from salt. Something to consider the next time you find yourself shifting a few kosher grains around on your plate.
Speaking of sodium-induced coronary, you have to watch ‘Bacon‘ by The Benevolent Butcher. This is some serious food porn for the carnivorous ones.
What’s Coming Up Next Week?
Dana is heading to Slurp! Noodlefest in Toronto this weekend, she’s certain to have oodles and oodles to report back.
Amanda is currently feasting and sipping on the elderflower bush outside of her UK home. You are going to love the delicious concoctions she’s able to create, from homemade cordial and beyond.
Hopefully you’re no longer EGGsausted from all the Easter nonsense and can fully embrace the EGGsellent posts we have prepared for you next week – I Am The Egg Mom – understanding the carton (organic, omega-enriched, natural…), Real Men DO Eat Quiche (especially this ham and cheese version), and The Best Scrambled Eggs in 30 Seconds.
Enjoy the rest of your Fun Friday and gorge yourself on some weekend play. Remember to:
Eat well. Have Fun. Wear a foxy Apron.
